Applications of EDXRF Light Element Analysis to Cement, Slag and Limestone

On Thursday 15th of December 2011 a web seminar (webinar) named "Applications of EDXRF Light Element Analysis to Cement, Slag and Limestone", took place on Cisco Webex Event Center, presented by Arkady Buman and Karen Roscoe.
The potential capabilities of "S2 Ranger LE Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) Analyzer", a brand new analytical instrument, manufactured by Brucker, specialized in the quantitive analysis of light elements, was presented (Fig 1).
The X-Ray fluorescence analysis is based on the secondary fluorescence that is emitted from a sample during its irradiation caused by the X-Ray tube. Then, the secondary fluorescence is separated into two different wavelengths (λ1,λ2) as it enters a series of crystals. In order for the detector to be functional, only 3keV energy and a nubmer of X-Ray photons are needed.

The most important hardware advantages are presented in the following bullets:
  • It comes fully adjusted in an all in one box
  • It has a single port connection
  • Computer and Printer are integrated and easy to use (touch screen etc.)
  • Callibration is not required
  • It has its own Vacuum Pump and Sample Charger
  • It supports an automated system that can self-control up to 28 samples
The S2 Ranger LE is also able to measure all the elements, from  Na to U, in every quantity, from ppm to percent. Samples in both liquid (Oils) and solid (Oxides, Metals) state can be tested as well. Standarization is not required as mentioned and the whole procedure would last no more than 5 minutes for each sample, which is due to a unique mathematical algorithm, that the S2 Ranger LE is using.
The X-Ray tube (anode) is made of Pd. Some of its characteristics are (Max Power=50W, V=5-50KV and Max Current 2000μA).

The detection equipment (X Flash LE) is a 4th generation silicon drift Detector that has an active area, near to 10mm², which is considered to be more than enough for the analyzes to take place.
Some of the most important software advantages will now be presented as well:
  • Unique Light Element Performance with high transmission
  • Unique energy resolution (129eV FWHM)
  • Unmatched count rates
  • Better detection limits for Na, Mg seperation of neighboring peaks statistics
As a result it is substainable for Na where the improvement founded is almost 800% compared to SDD and the Mg 400% as well. This was mentioned as a "Revolutionery Improvement by the speaker".
Lastly, examples about the applications of S2 Ranger were given, like Cement industry, Slags and Mineral-Mining to name but a few.
To conclude S2 Ranger with X Flash LE is an extremely stable instrument with high sensitivity, capable of seperating all the elements, requires no calibration and can give answers about the element quantification.
